Employing a very diverse workforce brings significant advantages to any organization. For example, different perspectives bring different solutions to a problem. People who have different experiences and broader skill sets bring a greater understanding to internal and external issues. Broader viewpoints mean more and different ideas are generated and shared within the group. And ultimately, there may be many good ways to achieve the same objective in a diverse group.
Along with the benefits are inherent challenges that can limit the diverse and inclusive nature of any organization. Some people respond negatively to any form of change with behaviors and actions that contribute to an exclusionary environment. Some established work procedures may also contribute to exclusionary practices. New methods of evaluation, task assignment, and appraisal may need to be implemented to ensure fairness and objectivity for all. And finally, differences may require clear and direct communication. Diverse workgroups may require greater attention to clear, open and honest communication.
